While it's true that you probably can't overdrive the L-7 with 100W, you 
probably CAN drive it past the legal limit, especially on the lower 
bands.  The power supply and tubes have the dynamic capability, even 
though it wouldn't support key-down CW at those levels.

The ALC from the L-7 is negative going, and is adjustable from the front 
panel.  So you're better off using the ALC and setting it for the legal 
limit or less with a monitor scope.  3-500Z's aren't cheap any more, and 
the difference between 1200 and 1500W is not discernible from the other end.
