 Well, 56K or X2 technology is simply looking liks this...
 ISP/BBS===DIGITAL PHONE LINE===>Teleco===>ANALOG PHONE LINE===>YOU.
 X2 technology uses the fact that most ISP and some BBS uses digital phone
 line (T-1, ISDN, etc), and since the conversion is only one way (Digital
 to Analog), they can cram more data into the signal without fearing for
 data loss due to the ADC sampling (Quantizition (sp?) error I believe).
 Since this technology requires one side to have DIGITAL phone line, it
 also restricts that only the "Server" (ie:ISP, BBS, or whoever have a
 digital phone line) can send at 53.3Kbps (current limit imposed by teleco
 equiptment, USR is peitioning for FCC to increase to 56Kbps), but the
 "client" (whoever uses the Analog end of the connection) can only send at
 a maxinum of 33.6Kbps...
 I hope this clears thing up...
... Drop your carrier ... we have you surrounded!
