Schumacher-Hakkinen duel called off

BERLIN (Jul 24, 1998 - 12:28 EDT) - Organisers of a planned high-speed car
race between Formula One stars Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen through
the centre of Berlin have called off the event.

Stephan Clausen, spokesman for the television production company which had
planned the race, said on Friday that it had not been able to reach an
agreement with Hakkinen sponsor Mercedes and had decided to cancel the
race.

"It's definitely dead," Clausen said. "Mercedes wanted to
race against another Mercedes team but that wasn't what we were looking
for."

The production company had aimed to stage a four-minute race down a
blocked-off stretch of road and round the Grand Star roundabout.
