-=> Quoting Steven Horn to Jim Weller <=-
JW> We're out of touch with the south for 2-5 weeks every spring,
JW> except by air.
SH> I remember that this used to do wonders for the price of food.
Things are better now. The gap between the end of the ice bridge and the
beginning of the ferry operations is shorter, the stores have more
freezer and storage capacity, and a helicopter company now offers to
carry containers from one tractor trailer to another one waiting on the
other side. It's just $85 a pop. The choppers are so big they can even
lift a small sub-compact car across in a sling. That's $170 (the
passengers go across on a separate trip.)
JW> Yep, as soon as it will sustain the load. You need 40 inches of
JW> clear ice to support a super B train. We should have that in a week
JW> if it stays cold.
SH> I looked at your temps and prefer ours but we're not likely to see an
SH> ice bridge any time soon. But Dawson's ice bridge has been in place
SH> for some time.
We now have light traffic on the ice bridge and heavy trucks on the
ferry simultaneously. The ice roads to the remote mines should be
groomed for traffic within a week.
Cheers,
YK Jim
