Herbert must wait

(25-Jul-98) - Johnny Herbert's hopes of staying at Sauber have suffered a
minor blow with news that Frenchman Jean Alesi will be staying with the
outfit next season.

Herbert and Alesi are believed to have had a turbulent relationship so far
this year and it was thought that if Alesi left for another team then
Herbert would stay.

But team boss Peter Sauber has confirmed that Alesi will remain at the
Swiss outfit and that he is in no rush to finalise the second seat.

"We have a contract with Jean for next year," he said. "As
far as Johnny is concerned, we will have to wait and see what
happens."

Sauber did, however, dismiss speculation that Heinz-Harald Frentzen could
be returning to the team following two years at Williams.

"It might not be good for him to come back here and it might not be
good for the team," added Sauber. "After Williams, any other team
is a step down. That could be frustrating. Maybe he should go to
Indycars."
