Dunno how it is where you are, but we return our deposit bottles and
cans to the store (or equivalent) where we bought them, and get our
deposits back.  Some people roam the streets and pick up the ones that
careless people litter, and get the nickels back for them.  I understand
that where you are, it's dimes not nickels even...  :)
