Beleive it or not, the only difference between Pro-logic & surround (apart
from DSP etc) is the addition of a centre channel. Surround isn't actually
4 independent channels at all. After reading a book on surround, there are 2
types of surround available - matrix and discrete. Discrete is the method i
explained in my previous message, where the rear channel is obtained by
cancelling the like charges across the left and rights. Matrix is basically
where you use a 4 track system, and each channel has it's own speaker. It
sounds like this is what you are after. The method never really caught on
uch
and availability of commercial recordings using this method were quite
uncommon
since it meant that the recordings would have to be re-mastered in matrix
format.
If you want to be able to control four independent audio channels, the
achine
you want is a four-track tape recorder. I'm not sure how you want to present
this documentary, but if YOU were the only person needing to present it, you
could set up the speakers according to the orientation of the mikes when
recording. But if you want to distribute multiple copies, you will have to
et
hold of a second 4-track in order to duplicate it, and give details on
peaker
setup. The problem is that 4-track cassettes and standard 2 track cassettes
o
not sound the same on the same tape deck. There is a big difference in speed.
