These days I suspect most manufacturers are more interested in
seeing their products wear out so you'll buy new stuff. Yeah, I
may be cynical, but I'm also a realist.

True enough. They must have been reasonably confident that you
weren't going to come back in the next few minutes. Most times
theives are anxious to grab something easy to sell and get out
quickly before they are caught.
