MR> Last improvement I remember for the turntable was an entirely optical
MR> pickup using a laser. No needle to scratch the delicate grooves.
MR> Here's the announcement from 1995. Don't know if the url is still
 MR> good:

I remember reading about something like that at some time, but it
was a lot longer ago than that, back in the 70's I think.

MR> Subject: Introducing the World's First *LASER* Turntable!

Hmmm... so his pickup is a turntable...

MR> - No acoustic feedback or howling

I don't see why that should be. Vibration from a loudspeaker
could still shake the whole thing. The same techniques would be
needed to isolate this one as were used on conventional pickups.

MR> - Records warped as much as 5-6mm can be played back

I've seen some moving iron pickups that could do that...

MR> - Cracked or split records can be played if they are joined with
 MR> clear tape

The refraction/reflection caused by the tape doesn't worry it?

Thanks. I'll look for it next time I'm on line.
