Consider the alternative:  at the Ottawa Marathon last weekend, one runner
cross the line with a personal best (3:0x:??) -- just over 3 hours -- and
promptly died of a heart attack.

(Historical irony:  my high school history teacher taught that the original
run was by Phidipidaes who cried "Rejoice!  We conquor!" and then
expired.)
