Yep, that's me. I was somewhat aware, but too busy to care. ;)

Yeah, I was probably somewhere in the middle of that scale.
Followed a lot of echos and had limited time between job and
family raising. I was aware of the "zone wars" somewhat but
Fidonet was so big back then that it didn't really seem like "that
stuff" mattered too much to me (individual sysops). Plus we had
plenty of squabbles within the local net over cost recovery plans
and the like. Also it seemed like it took a lot more time/effort
to keep the mailer/bbs running smoothly. Always a tweak to make
in the master batch file and all the various individual configs
for all the added utilities that were in use. Good times.
