Hi Bob

 BL> ]Hi all,

BL> 36 years ago when I was designing radiograms for Pye, IHi-Fi

BL> was based on the Golden Ear. I had four records, a rock 'n' roll 78, a

BL> Frank Sinatra EP, a 45 by Winifred Atwell and an LP of Beethoven's

BL> Emperor Suite which was a great test record for cross-modulation and

BL> wow and flutter in turntables. I wore out 6 copies and knew it better

 BL> than most conductors.

BL> And I have not heard it since. I was cured of Beethoven forever.

BL> Until last night, when the Queensland Symphony Orchestra played it.

BL> "Hey! I know this!" I thought, and as it played I automatically

BL> listened for cross-modulation and the wavering piano... It's pretty

BL> obvious that recording techniques have improved in 35 years.

BL> Beethoven is brilliant. The depth in his music is wonderful and I

BL> was able to appreciate the music itself for the first time without

BL> listening for flaws on the equipment...

are you certain? once a tech, always a tech...

BL> but the QSO are a pack of

BL> butchers! They murdered it. Bloody hell!

Perhaps you've listened to one version for too long. I have that

problem, when I hear a version on radio that differs from my pet

recording I have to deliberately block my objections, and ask

myself to keep listening. It's difficult, though: I've yet to hear

a version of Saint-Saens' Organ symphony that records the pianos as

clearly as the ~1957 version I have on cd.

Cheers
