We make progress. I've put the logic back so it's an option to not look
inside archives, and I thought you might be interested in the test I've
just done. 237,093,765 bytes in 5,894 files took 28 seconds to get the
directory info, sort on file name within directory, and display name,
file size, etc. *2* seconds if I don't display! Turning on the CRC
switch resulted in 6 mins 45 secs with display, 6 mins 18 secs without.

I can hardly believe that 2 second figure, but I've run it several
times, and on different disks with b/t 136 and 260 meg and it's the
same. On the 136 meg disk, you blink and you miss it!

This is running in a DOS box under Windows, with SMARTDRV enabled, on a
486/133 with a sub-10mS hard drive.

I've still got a lot of testing to do until I get to incorporating your
stuff, but I thought you might be interested in the performance of the
basic "engine".
