|...what is going on? i have been thru the cfg for qedit several

This is a Tab character.  In order to elimate them from your file, do
the following:
- In QConfig, select the Tabs option from the main menu.  Make sure the
  following are set:
    Do you want the editor to start in Physical Tab Expansion Mode: Y
    Do you want the editor to start in Tabs Out Mode: N
  Then save the settings and exit qconfig.
- Next, start up QEdit and load the file that has the tab characters.
  Use the Pull-down menus and select: Other, then "Expand Tabs to
  Spaces".
- Finally, save the file.
This should remove all of the tabs from the file you are working with.
