Let them eat "it"! 

I read - a long time ago - a dog buries bones, so they can later dig them out
and savour the mold/bacteria/whatever. When a dog isn't allowed to be a dog,
(EG: bury bones in the flower bed.) it will resort to desperate measures to
acquire a substitute.
