noise. At first he tackled misuse of sirens (and flashing lights!) on
cars driven by civilian officials. Their cars are have the sirens for
emergency trips. Hizzoner found that too often they were used to bull
thru traffic on routine trips.
Any one who tried to stargaze with the wail of a siren in his ear
can take comfort that at last someone is really trying to temper the
racket. The idea snowballed into a general push to reduce noise of all
kinds: machinery, road works, dogs, boomboxes, motorcycles.
Astropolitics
-----------
The File Cabinet case against Stewart Rorer by Amateur Astronomers
Association Inc in February 2004 was adjourned contemplating dismissal
at a bench appearance on 16 June 2004. The case was a supposed removal
of AAA papers and articles from its file cabinets in owl hours of 22-
23 January 2004 and placing them into trash bags.
The Manhattan District Attorney declined to prosecute Rorer due to
lack of credible evidence, confirmed alibi ruling out Rorer's
participation, harassing attitude from AAA, weak affidavit from a
supposed witness, and internal flaws in AAA's story.
Will Mike O'Gara concot a new 'theft' to get Stew arrested again?
He doesn't have to stage a new case at all!
Before the Recent Astronomy Seminar on 24 June 2004, O'Gara
commanded Seminar chair Frank Schmidt to call police if Mr Rorer
showed up at the meeting that evening and make them arrest Rorer!
Just for the Hell of it.
Schmidt rejected this demand and proceded with the Seminar as
normally. He did not even attempt a police interception when Rorer did
join the group at the social supper after the Seminar. The entire
Seminar at supper nearly choked from laughter about this episode.
O'Gara had other recent unbecoming and disruptive behavior. At the
club's annual meeting on 19 May 2004 he asserted to the audience that
Stew Rorer confessed to be in the premises during the file cabinet
incident. In fact, Rorer had already demonstrated to the district
attorney that he was not involved at all in the incident by a
verifiable alibi.
At the May 21st starviewing in Riverside Park, Mike o'Gara
confiscated some NYSkies flyers from a handouts table on the grounds
they contained negative comments about AAA. Pazmino had enough
additional copies with him to adequately satisfy the visitors.
At Carl Schurz park for the Venus transit on June 8th, Mike, from
several meters distance, shouted to Pazmino that he did not want
NYSkies litterature at that session. Pazmino ahowed him a fistful of
flyers and continued to hand them out as he walked past o'Gara.
In keeping with Mike's hostile mindset, in the case of the Great
Eclipse Theft of 8 November 2004, he still is totally inert toward
compensating the victims. By now, they realize that they will not be
favorably considered at all under the present club regime.
NYSkies posted a current Board of Directors roster, as made known
by the Association as at mid June 2004. At that time there were 17
seatholders and one vacancy. Several comments and remarks were sent to
NYSkies about this list and Board operations. These are being passed
on to the whole Board.
In mid June, halfway thru the 2004 dues year, the club finally,
finally, sent out membership cards! They were printed on thick paper,
not card. They floated looselu in an otherwise empty regular business
envelope. The return address was the new 'POB 383' address, not the
old '1010 Park Av' one.
Recall that in February 2004 the AAA Board threw out the Lieber
suite of ByLaws reforms in a fit of negativism. A new set is in
preparation, evolved from Lieber's, for the new Board to consider.
On June 29th, Dennis Ferguson opened a new yahoo group for the
Amateur Astronomers Association political debate. It's open to any one
at 'AAA_ Politics{at}yahoogroups.com'. If NYSkiers can move their AAA
arguments to this new cite, NYSkies can continue its servie to home
astronomy in the New York area with far less 'noise' and 'static'.
If, from now on, you got complaints, grievances, gripes, beefs,
criticisms about Amateur Astronomers Association, do hop over to
'AAA_Politics'. The club leaders are itching to duke it out with you.
NYSkies
-----
Astronomers are exploiting NYSkies as a quick, handy, friendly,
and potent source of astronomy news relating to the City. And there is
LOTS of astronomy stuff going on around New York! Since it revived on
28 September 2001 (it was interrupted by World Trade Center) NYSkies
became the definitive forum and public record for matters bearing on
home astronomy in and around New York.
Until the newly established 'AAA_Politics' forum in Yahoogroups
gets up to speed, you'll see in NYSkies for a while longer the banter
relating particularly to the Amateur Astronomers Association. It pays
to listen to the rants, blusters, tirades in 'AAA_Politics' even if
you opt out of playing in them. At the least, you take into account
the words of the senior members before joining the Association. Or you
can let its dialog modulate your choice to renew AAA membership.
Joining NYSkies is easy. Send an empty email to this Yahoo
maillist at 'nysky-subscribe{at}yahoogroups.com'. Its posts are sent to
you in your email and you post to it by email. It's that simple!
Or you may go to 'groups.yahoo.com/group/nysky'. If you are
