I use an old (486) laptop for mail and nntp news. It's always
"on" - actually, it has to be, because the special (and
expensive) lithium rechargeable battery that runs the clock and CMOS won't
hold a charge any more. When I'm not using it, I put it into suspend mode.
2 seconds to suspend, 5 seconds to reawaken. It even transparently recovers
the PCMCIA network connection.
I got used to "instant on/off" with my PDAs, now I expect it in
my PCs as well. IBM went to some trouble to get suspend/hibernate working
well on many of their older desktop machines too, under both OS/2 and
Windows.
