Hakkinen strikes back
---------------------
[Sun Jul-26 15h30 CET]
Today in Austria Mika Hakkinen broke the winning streak of Michael
Schumacher and took first place in the Austrian Grand Prix. Second on the
podium was his teammate David Coulthard. After winning the last three
races, the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher today finished in third place.
This is McLaren's fourth One-Two of the season.
The race started in bright, sunny weather and a temperature of 27 degrees
C. As the lights went out everyone left the grid except for Panis whose
engine had stalled. Hakkinen (3rd on grid) squeezed between Alesi (2nd on
grid) and Fisichella (pole) and out accelerated the Benetton into the first
corner. Further back, M.Schumacher (4th on grid) did the same, passing down
the inside of Alesi.
The order in the first corner was Hakkinen, Fisichella, M.Schumacher,
Alesi, Barrichello, Irvine, Frentzen, R.Schumacher, Salo, Diniz, Hill,
Coulthard and Verstappen. Takagi came into the coner sideways, bounced off
the inner rail and into the back of Trulli, then into the sidepods of
Tuero, who in turn pushed Herbert into the gravel. At the second corner
Diniz went sideways into Salo forcing Coulthard to spin and sending several
others over the grass. Salo does a wheels spinning turn to point in the
right direction, hits the front of Coulthard and stalls. Coulthard now
limps back to the pits for a new nose. Meanwhile the Safety Car is on
track while the various bits are removed.
Two laps later and the Safety Car is in the pits. M.Schumacher is now right
on the tail of Hakkinen trying to get past. He tries to run around the
outside of Hakkinen, but slides and loses two places. One lap later and
he's back on Hakkinen's tail.
By lap 16 the top 10 are:
Hakkinen->1.000s->M.Schumacher->4.300s->Fisichella->6.700s->Irvine->10.100s->Alesi->0.600s->Frentzen->0.700s->Coulthard->0.900s->R.Schumacher->0.700s->Hill->5.600s->Trulli.
Coulthard is in 7th, even though he started from 14th on the grid. Then
M.Schumacher goes too wide, bounces over the gravel and destroys his front
wing. He's just past the pit entrance so he must now complete a lap with
partial bodywork, before repair can be effected. Meanwhile Frentzen
retires with a blown engine. M.Schumacher pits and rejoins at the back of
the field.
On lap 22 the grid front row takes itself out. Fisichella tries to dive
down the inside of Alesi. Unfortunately there is no space, they hit and
are both out of the race. A few laps later Villeneuve has a moment when he
also runs too wide and crosses the gravel. He returns to the track and
keeps going though.
By lap 30 the top 10 are:
Hakkinen->20.600s->Coulthard->23.900s->Irvine->13.300s->R.Schumacher->6.500s->Trulli->0.300s->Villeneuve->1.600s->Herbert->0.700s->M.Schumacher->1.400s->Hill->Nakano.
Coulthard has advanced to 2nd and M.Schumacher's charge has taken him to
8th so far. By lap 47 he is in 5th place right behind his little brother.
They dice for a few laps, with Michael almost taking to the gravel again
when a move goes wrong. Finally on lap 55 Michael is past and 15s behind
third place and team mate Irvine. With 4 laps left he passes Irvine who
has slowed due to brake problems (?). At the flag it is Hakkinen 5s in
front of Coulthard, with M.Schumacher and Irvine over 30s further back.
Jordan take 5th and 7th places, sandwiched around the underachieving World
Champion, Villeneuve. Rosset came home 12th with a flat rear tyre and no
rear wing after an off on the last lap.
This result gives Hakkinen a total of 66 points in the drivers'
championship and puts him 8 points in front of M.Schumacher. McLaren now
have 102 points in the Constructors' Championship, which is 12 points in
front of Ferrari.
The top three fastest exit speeds to the three sections of track were:
First section - Coulthard (300kph), M.Schumacher (299), Hakkinen (297),
Second section - Coulthard (270), Hakkinen (269), Hill (268), Third
section: Coulthard (269), M.Schumacher (267), Wurz (265).
In the interview afterwards, Hakkinen (winner) said he had had a very good
afternoon and a very long one. He was full of praise for the team, whose
strategy of a one stop race had paid off. When ask if he had expected to
make such a good start he said that the start is always such a gamble. He
just put his foot down and headed for the corner, luckily he passed down
the inside of Fisichella, but was going so quickly that he had a bit of a
slide around the first bend. When asked about the dicing with M.Schumacher
in the first few laps, he said that he had had some brake problems and
could not go into the corners as hard as he would have liked. This allowed
Michael to keep close and keep challenging. Once Michael had spun off he
found himself in a good position and it became a little quieter.
David Coulthard (2nd) said that it had been a long time since he had been
on the podium (5 races ago in Spain) and he was glad to be back. He said
that, because he had been so far back on the grid (14th) he had had to take
many chances. He was involved in a crash at the second corner and
immediately had to return to the pits for a new nose wing. He said that,
because his car is so fast, he did not find it too hard to overtake so many
people. He was full of praise for those he overtook, as they all behaved
correctly. They kept to their chosen lines and he was able to pass. When
asked again if he had any specific problems with anyone (was the
interviewer fishing for another comment about Hill - in the last couple of
races both M.Schumacher and Irvine have specifically brought up the
problems of overtaking Hill) he said he had had no real problems.
Michael Schumacher (3rd) said that after his off into the gravel, he
thought his race was over, returning to the pits and fitting the new nose
lost him a lot of time. He said it had been his own fault, by going off
the race line onto part of the track which had little grip. Once he was
back in the race, he found it very exciting to have so many cars to pass.
When asked about the problems he had passing his brother he said that Ralf
was paid to race, not give him presents. Ralf kept some good lines and
made it very hard to pass. When asked if the passing of Irvine in the
final few laps was due to team orders, he said that they had had some brake
problems on Irvine's car, so the team had asked him to slow down.
When interviewed Ralf Schumacher (5th) said he was very pleased with the
result and felt that their whole package of engine, chassis and tyres was
now really coming together. When asked about the battle with his brother,
he said it had been a good hard fight, but unfortunately Michael had won.
He hoped for many more battles with him in the future. When asked about
his chances next weekend in Germany, he said it will depend how the car
likes the circuit and we should ask him again on Friday.
In an interview afterwards Hill (7th) said that it had been a good race and
he was pleased for the team, with Ralf finishing 5th and scoring two
points. He felt that the Bridgestone tyres had the edge here, as was shown
by the domination of the McLarens again.
