-=> Quoting Steven Horn to Jim Weller <=-
SH> I remember you guys had a little net up there in the early 90s. Did
SH> it (like the one I was NC for here) die a natural death?
We had 5 BBSs in Yellowknife, one of which was a hub in 1992 when I got
a modem. By 1994, after just one year of local internet availability, we
were down to one hub, one other BBS, and I was it's only point and I
think only regular user. When the hub quit, my Sysop asked me if I
wanted to go from point to hub as he was quitting too. I didn't take him
up on his offer. After a few months of no FIDO, I hooked up, first to
Salata and later to Doc's Place, by internet. I still like FIDO a lot and
hope it hangs on a long time.
JW> I have lived in Yellowknife in the Northwest
JW> territories for the last 22 years.
SH> That gives you an award for endurance. I lived in Yellowknife from
SH> 1986 to 1988 and arrived in Whitehorse in June 1989 which I thought
SH> made me an old-timer.
In the north, you're an old timer after one year.... if you have the
right state of mind. Some people never get the feeling but they usually
don't stay.
JW> 10,000 Japanese visitors this winter.
SH> We're going to have work harder here in the Yukon.
We're both in competition with Alaska and Finland too. If I lived in
Asia and could visit only one spot in northern Canada, quite frankly I'd
pick Whitehorse rather than Yellowknife. You've got everything we
have.... plus mountains. Did your PR people forget to mention the
mountains?
SH> Neither my wife and I hunt but she
SH> cooks well enough that friends donate.
I don't hunt anymore but most of my friends and relatives do, so I'm
always well stocked with country food. I wish I had time to fish though.
my wife and I split the cooking. She's the better baker but we both do
well at main dishes. Cooking has been a hobby of mine ever since I left
home 35 years ago and had to fend for myself.
SH> Drop in more often,
I plan to stick around.
Cheers,
YK Jim
