    The init string that you use really depends on the specific software
package that you use.
There is no such thing as a one size fits all init string.  If there was
one single good init string that worked great for everything, we would
certainly make it the default.  It would certainly save us alot of
support headaches.
However, that's not how it works, the init strings are dependent upon
the software.  The whole purpose of an init string is to make the modem
behave the way the software expects.  For instance, some software
packages expect the modem to return numeric result codes.  Other
packages expect to see verbal result codes.  Now obviously if I give you
an init string that works great for the first package, it isn't going to
work well at all for the second.
If you'll let me know which BBS software package you are using, I'll try
to give you an init string for that particular package.  The string that
you posted will allow the modem to operate with optimal performance, so
if it's working, then you probably don't need to change it!
