Hi Steve,
I just wanted to add to your comment about safety and planning a dive,
you see after finishing up getting my certification in Hawaii my former
dive partner and ex-husband(not the reason) wanted to do a dive while we
were out on a chartered boat for fishing, first of all when it came to
the dive their was no platform for the boat for diving, so we did the
over the side backwards entrance which went fine but when it came to the
descent I wanted to follow the anchor line down, But my husband insisted
that I do a free descent, I did and I kept having to stop because my
ears would not equalize(being new I didn't know that I had to keep
equalizing all the time) So my ears were in terrible pain but I got
equalized and then we started along the bottom, following a lobster,
then as we got closer to the lava tubes I got caught up in the current,
I did not have anything to bang on my tank to get my husbands attention
because he had his back to me, before reaching the surface I inverted
myself, and got the B.C. to dump the air it still had not released, I
got back down found my husband in a panic and then we surfaced. We came
up a long way from the boat, my husband wanted us to descend again, but
I could not my ears would not allow it, when we got back to the boat
there was one little step on the back, so we took off our gear and
handed it up and then could pull ourselves up onto the step and into the
boat, after we got home I went to a diving Doctor who told me that I had
a "Hemotamponic-blood in the eardrum" -we did not plan the dive and I
did what my ex-Husband wanted me too and not what I was comfortable
with, he paniced-draining the air in his tank, So I have learned not do
just dive but to plan the dive and dive the plan which is what PADI and
I'm sure other well recognized certifying agencies teach. Since my
husband and I are no longer together I have only gotten a chance to dive
one other time and that was a trip to Hawaii that I won and me and my
boyfriend went and he tried an Intro dive and everything went well, no
problems in equalizing, no nose bleeds, everything went great. I'm
spoiled though, I'd like to try more warm water diving, But I'm involved
with a Volunteer organization here in California-The Marine Mammal
Center so we are getting a group together so I can get a chance to do
the cold water diving so maybe I'll change my mind.
