Concerning _Pro-2005_, Jonathan Guy said to Troy H. Cheek in SCANRADIO:
JG> IMHO, Keep the PRO43...it may only be 200ch vs 400ch in the 2005, but
JG> from what I've read/seen it is basically the same style architecture
JG> as its lager sibling the 2006...
For that matter, the only manual he had was for the 2006. Claimed that there
were so few differences between the 2004/5/6 that it wasn't worth the effort
to track down the correct manual. What I tried from the manual worked, so I
can't argue that...
JG> especially since you've said that you already purchased a mobile rig
I purchased a Pro-2026 and returned it. Worked fine, except when in the car
where I wanted to use it. There, it developed a nasty habit of finding
constant signals right in the middle of ranges I wanted to search. My Pro-43
using the same antenna, amp, and universal power adapter, said those signals
didn't exist.
Naturally, I only thought to try the 43 after I'd spent half the day moving
the antenna around and re-wiring the power supply trying to eliminate the
signals, thinking the problem *had* to be in one of those areas.
Anyway, I took it back, deciding to try either the 2046 or the 2040, and
since the 2040 was on sale, I tried that one first. I'll probably go back in
a week or two and try the 2046. Any experience with either of these?
JG> ...you will never be able to replace the PRO43 as a handheld, even
I'd come to that conclusing on my own. Regardless of what base/mobile I get,
I believe I'll keep the 43 for handheld use. If only I could use it in the
car without swerving off the road...
JG> Speed-wise your 43 already runs rings around the 2005...and even if
JG> you do decide to upgrade with the computer interface or memory mods
JG> in the future the pro43 can be hooked up to the CE-232 interface
It's my understanding that the 43 can only be modified to be programmed from
the computer, and that it can't talk back to the computer like some of the
other scanners.
JG> The CB reception isn't that swift on the 2004/5/6/35 anyway...I'm not
JG> sure if I've ever really heard anything from CB on the scanners...you
JG> can buy a cheap CB for $30 and even talk on it :)
Yeah, but the ones that scan are $100+, aren't they? And that's one more box
bolted under my dash, one more antenna on my roof, one more wire to hook into
the fusebox, etc.
How bad is "isn't that swift"? Not as good as a dedicated CB? Not as good
as most scanners can do in other bands? I'm just wanting to hear what's
going on 10 miles down the road I'm travelling, not listen in on
conversations half a state away. I've got HAM for that. :-)
JG> IF you decide that you liked the PRO43 the best and you like that
JG> 'hidden band' and always remember how nice that 43 WAS it'll be too
JG> late, 'cause the original 43 is no more...
I've already decided I like the 43 best. Much better reception, cleaner
signals, less squelch tail, etc than anything else I've used. And I didn't
realize how much I loved triple conversion image reduction until I tried some
serious band searching on the 2040. Sure, I can 'use' the 2040's lack of
triple conversion to have an "out of band" experience and access images of
certain desirable signals, but at other times it's a royal pain.
JG> One last thing...I've seen a 2005 in a pawn shop here in Chattanooga
 JG> (Highway 153/Grubb Rd..Hixson area) for $150 asking price, a little
JG> rough, but it gives you an idea that the older 2004/5/6 are starting
JG> to show up around this area.
It also gives me an idea that, just based on the cash offers I've gotten for
my 43, trading a 43 for a 2005 is a bad idea just in monetary terms.
If I understand correctly, the 2004/5/6 were made by the same people (GRE) as
the 43, and share a lot of the same electronics. A larger, 400 channel
version of the 43 is still my first choise as a base/mobile. I haven't found
any on this side of Cleveland. Next time you notice one of these in your
neck of the woods, give it a real good look and then get in touch with me
pronto. Please!
 JG> Just my 2 cents...don't blame me...you asked for comments :)
If I didn't want feedback, I wouldn't have asked!
