 Looks like the Fido message demons have been munching on the mail again.

 Actually, someone else replied to me and in his reply you can see
 the sum total of my comment from the chewed post: that I suspected
 Caller Id programs required the use of a CID-capable modem, which
 is what I thought.  CID I have -actually the nifty Call Waiting Caller
 Id- but my modem is not Caller ID savvy.
