McLaren still fastest

(21-Jul-98) - McLaren topped the test times at Monza last week as the teams
prepared for next month's German Grand Prix.

However McLaren's test wasn't without problems. Hakkinen suffered a
technical problem with an auxiliary system on the car, while Coulthard spun
and had an engine failure.

Schumacher and team-mate Eddie Irvine spent much of their time comparing
the long wheelbase version of their F300 with the standard version. Both
were impressed with the new car but had little hope of matching the
McLarens for pace.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen continued the Williams team's return to
competitiveness with the fifth best time, as the team concentrated on
high-speed aerodynamic and chassis set-up work.

Williams test driver Juan Pablo Montoya failed to impress in a test that
was believed to be crucial to his hopes of landing a full-time seat with
the team next year. He was over one second adrift of Frentzen.

Ralf Schumacher and Damon Hill at Jordan were both impressed with the new
M-spec Mugen-Honda engine.

"The driveability is better," said Hill, who was 11th fastest.
"But we wouldn't have minded more power."
