subject: Ice roads

JW> No. Today has been the first really cold day all winter (-32 C).
JW> Until now it has been anywhere from -1 to -24. The ferry is still
JW> running on the Mackenzie River so we have access to the south.

SH> My recollection was that the ferry shut down in November at the latest
SH> which is when the ice bridge went in.

It's now fallen to the -35 to -39 range which may be awkward for us but
it's good news for the trucking and mining industry. The roads should
take shape quickly now.

The ferry usually shuts down late Nov to mid Dec but in recent years it
generally makes it until close to Christmas. The ice road used to open
after a 2-3 week delay after that. But in recent years, using sprayers
to build up the bridge quickly with freezing water, it is often ready
the same day the ferry shuts down for the season.

The ferry is still running despite the low temps. It now runs 24 hours a
day whether it has passengers or not, just to break up the new ice in the
narrow channel it runs in.

SH> our winter's mildness and the associated freezes and
SH> thaws has placed the likelihood of the running of the Yukon Quest in
SH> jeopardy. There may simply not be enough snow for this 1000 mile dog
 SH> race.

That would be a shame.

Cheers,

YK Jim
