RF> Hello... just wondering if scuba diving is fun. Never done it, and
RF> probably never will, but still I am curious. Bye now. Rachael
You must at least be mildly curious or you wouldn't have bothered
to post a message here. Let me put it this way. If you have ever
kept an aquarium at home, or visited a big public aquarium, you perhaps
have wondered what it would be like to actually be in there with the
creatures, swimming around and sharing their environment. Ever watched
Jaques Cousteau specials when they used to be on?
Scuba diving can be a fantastic experience, if you have an appreciation
for natural beauty. Cozumel, Mexico, Palancar Reef: Imagine hanging
suspended in clear blue warm water, 70 or 80 feet down against a near
vertical coral reef wall, swarming with tropical fish of every size
and color imaginable. Your world is a circle of cerulean blue 200'
across, with the sun dancing on the waves overhead and your exhaust
bubbles sparkling like diamonds as they stream away and head for the
surface. Maui, Hawaii: Imagine listening to the song of a humpback
whale, somewhere off shore, maybe miles away..but for real, not on a tape
recording. Play with an octopus or squid, pet a sleeping fish on a night
dive, explore the silent compartments of a sunken WWII minesweeper.
These are all things I have done in various places, and the memories
will last the rest of my life.
If you are a comfortable swimmer, with reasonably good health, you
can sign up for a "Discover Diving" program at most dive shops.
and even take a demonstration dive with most charter boat operators
in Hawaii if you ever go there on vacation. These demo dives don't
cost much, usually less than $50, and are a good way to see if diving
is something you want to invest in as a long term hobby.
