Mark,

I took a look at McAfee's scan settings and saw it did a scan once a
week.

Being Paranoid I changed the setting to Custom - every day - when the
computer wasn't being used.

I do a lot of manual (1, 2, 3, etc.) file scans after I download
anything, so the onscreen reading shows the last thing it has done.

I have looked through the Log sometimes to see the details of any recent
scan.
