Datastrip Technology To Be Used In "Safe Student" ID Cards To Help
Prevent School Kidnappings
Photographs, Authorizations, Medical Information Will Be Contained
In Tiny Bar Code
EXTON, PA -- (INTERNET WIRE) - Datastrip announces that its 2D
bar code technology is being used to create a new breed of ID
cards designed to help prevent abductions at schools. These new
"safe student" ID cards will include small bar codes encoded with
the names and photographs of students as well as adults who are
authorized to pick them up, plus emergency numbers and medical data.
School personnel will use a portable bar code reader to decode the
information and match it against adults who come to claim children
during or after school.
Datastrip has been approached by ID card partners around the country
that are working with public schools, religious schools and police
departments to implement safe student ID card programs. The programs
are expected to be voluntary and make both student and parent cards
available for a nominal fee.
The ID card integrators plan to use Datastrip's 2D bar code technology
because it can hold twice the data of other solutions in one-third the
space, accommodating photographs, text and even fingerprints or other
biometrics in an area the size of a magnetic stripe. Information on the
bar code cannot be read without a Datastrip reader, protecting children
in the event the card is lost.
The bar code also defies tampering, offering an important advantage
over conventional photo IDs that can be altered and smart cards that
can be reprogrammed.
The ID cards will be decoded with Datastrip's DSVerify2D bar code
reader, the only handheld device of its kind that can decode and
display photographs as well as text and fingerprints.
This will enable school personnel to swipe the ID cards and perform
identification duties outside the building as parents or other adults
pull up in their cars, eliminating the need to park and come inside.
"Divorce custody battles, stranger abductions and terrorist concerns
have created a growing security problem for many schools, and
administrators are searching for strategies to help foil kidnapping
attempts," said Chuck Lynch, Datastrip Vice President of Sales and
Marketing.
"With the ability of our technology to validate individual identities,
these safe student ID cards are a new weapon in the struggle to keep
our children out of harm's way."
