Booting a file "runs" it.
You only needed to put the Floppy into the drive AFTER the machine was
operational
Boot sector viruses seem to have lost favour in recent years. They took some
skill to write, not just access to a "script kiddie toolbox".
I could send you some floppies if you wish to become reacquainted
