Some years ago I read a story in Analog about a planet where,
 every so many years, a confluence of events produced waves a 100
 feet high. People would come from all over the galaxy to surf
 those monster waves.

 Some years after that I read about a beach in Hawaii where, when
 there was a storm off the West Coast of the continental US,
 along with the right conditions otherwise, they would have 60
 foot waves.

 Well, I just heard a news report about surfers in California
 surfing a hundred foot wave, a once every several year
 occurance.

 So, apparently it does happen.
