The primary objective was to assimilate the All being by exposing it to 
Locutus of Borg!

After a close pursuit, the Borg managed to get the shields of the Enterprise
down, and simply transported directly onto the brigde and abducted Picard.
 LT> 3. How were the others able to save him?
After the Borg ship decimated the fleet at Wolf 359 and moved on to Earth,
Riker seperated the Enterprise (with Cmdr. Shelby on the helm of the Saucer
section) and Data and Worf piloted a shuttle through the Borg shield, after
which, they reclaimed the borgified Picard.
Onboard the Enterprise, Data was able to use Picard as interface and gain
access to the Borg hivemind. Here he's able to cheat the Borg into believing
it was time for regeneration. In effect, he put all Borg on the ship asleep.
After the Borgcube had been 'disabled' by the sleep, and thereby failed, it
selfdestructed, freeing Picard.

Q transported the Enterprise into the Delta Qaudrant, where the crew
encountered the Borg. In "Q Who?".
