I seem to get mixed results whenever I telnet_gate out of the BBS to different
telnet sites.

I thought I'd try setting up a "door" to nethack.alt.org. My external program command line looks like this:

?telgate nethack.alt.org

When I go to run it, it spews a short line of output like this immediately following the 'Connecting to' line:

 ý[CAN] ý ý#ý'

I can telnet to nethack.alt.org just fine from the command line.

Also tried mudgate.js and unixgate.js in place of telgate.js from the BBS, but no difference.

Interestingly telgate.js works just fine for other things, like
towel.blinkenlights.nl.
