F1 Junior Championship as of next season

(25-Jul-98) - Formula One will get a Junior Championship next year. The
International Formula 3000 championship will be renamed to Formula One
Junior Championship as of 1999.

With the adoption of the F3000 series into the Formula One circus, the FIA
hopes to see more Formula One teams getting involved in the series. At the
moment, McLaren is the only team running a F3000 team, but Stewart and
Benetton are said to be interested in starting a junior team as well.

In the series, all teams use the same chassis with the same engine. The
chassis is supplied by Lola Cars International Ltd. while the engine is
supplied by Zytek Systems Ltd. Unlike now, the number of drivers and teams
will be limited to the same number as in Formula One. Just 24 drivers from
12 teams (2 drivers per team) are allowed as of next season.

All races of the Junior Championship will be raced on Saturday afternoon
during European Formula One Grand Prix' at the same circuit Formula One is
racing on.
