KP> i think that it goes both ways, i remember fall of 94 when i heard about
KP> Quake and instantly hit the web desperatly searching for info..there
KP> was next to none, and i felt fustrated but at the same time i was like
KP> a kid on xmas eve...and i love that feeling...then later iD started
KP> releasing little bits of info here and there.. (albeit wrong info..)
KP> and that feeling was awesome too..
I enjoyed that in a way, but it also drove me nuts. I knew next to nothing
about the game (not that there was much to know then), and I wanted to know
more. That's probably why I want to get into the game industry; I just hate
being left in the dark.
KP> i think that game companies should treat their upcoming games like
movies,
KP> in that you get wicked 'previews' of some type with enuf info to get you
KP> drooling but not so much that you know everything there is to know about
a
KP> game.. i certainly dont want to know anymore than i
KP> already do about prey..
KP> i like the feeling of ignorance...=]
Hey, Sierra has already done that (and they've actually given out more info
than 3D Realms, ). Remember that "Preliminary Findings" CD (or if you
got Hellfire, the videos there)? There was plenty there to whet the
appetite, and it was in MPEG format too (my 3D Blaster excels at maximized
MPEG video).
And what do you mean, you don't want to know anymore than you do? Next to
nothing is known beyond the basic engine technology and the bare essentials
of the plot. Nothing is known about the gameplay, the characters, or the
level style. It's like knowing that your car has good wheels... yes, that's
great, but what about the rest of the car? It could have a go-kart engine
and less sitting room than the trunk, for all you know.
KP> oh..and on the topic of Half-Life..that game is going
KP> to DESTROY everything
KP> else...when i say it at E3 i nearly lost all my hair..
You went to E3? Man, I hope they get it up to Canada someday (we have a
high-tech industry here too, you know!), because I doubt I'll ever be able to
get in without copious amounts of cash.
But I think your E3 experience is really only a shred of what you can find
out now. The game looks pretty good now, and hopefully it'll be so advanced
that we won't care that it's using the Quake engine.
It should beat everything else that's out when it comes out (after Duke
Nukem Forever, of course :-) ), but then it has a relatively lonely release
slot. It'll come in-between games like Daikatana and Sin (don't know about
DNF), and before Prey and Trinity. But that's the problem, in a way... it'll
only really have a few months of glory before it gets booted aside.
