Deb,
I would encourage you to consider options besides working at home. For
instance, you could move to a location near a bus stop, or even within
walking distance of your work. As for myself, I live within walking
distance of work, and next to a major bus route.
If you are in a situation where there is no option other than the use of
a taxi, you might place it in proper perspective. A sighted person
must make car payments, pay car insurance, pay for gas, and car repairs.
This amount could easily add up to more than what you would pay in taxi
costs. In addition, I would encourage you to recalculate your taxi
costs. Unless you live in a town where the cabs charge $7 per mile, you
have miscalculated the taxi cost.
Hope this helps,
Greg Trapp
Glen,
Thank you for your letter. You are right about a sighted person
paying insurance , car payments and gasoline and repairs, etc. But
unless you make more than minimum wage and have full time employment, you are
fighting a losing
battle It is really hard to believe but where I
live going to a prospective employers place I would cross 3 pay
zones. The taxi company charges a flat pick up fee of $2 and 2.20 for
crossing the main strreet in town and then another 3.80 for crossing
a 4 lane highway. I know I could possibly move but that would be hard
to do right now. We have no busses in town. I am only a high school
graduate and I realize that I do need additional schooling to compete
in the working world now. Thanks for your input on the matter.
sincerely, Deb
