It appears as though a diver drowned off of the Kittery, ME coast on Sunday.
The diver in his mid 30's with about 10 years of experience was reported
missing by his dive buddy about 4PM Sunday. Both divers had been down for
about an hour just off Fort Foster, Gerrish Island, Kittery, ME and
had apparently had problems getting back to shore. The coast guard and
several rescue certified divers who were in the area searched until dusk at
about 8:30 and resumed the search today (monday 6/10). The Fort, a popular
municipal recreation area was closed today.
FYI from experience, the dive area off of Fort Foster is fairly shallow.
The tides were low about 2PM in that area and the tendancy is for divers to
go well off shore to get down more than 15 feet. I, too, have had to swim
much farther than I would have liked and was very tired there. There is a
healthy current well off shore and visability on the surface was marginal
with low overcast and occasional fog yesterday.
More when it comes out in the news.
