Dome gear up

(17-Jul-98) - Japanese racing car constructor Dome have made another step
forward in their Formula 1 program after completing the design and
construction of a new semi-automatic gearbox for their F105-Mugen.

The company, who originally intended to enter Formula 1 in 1997, are to
shakedown the new unit on July 16 at the Motegi circuit.

The development of the "Prototype semi-automatic gearbox with engine
control capabilities" has been funded by the Kyoto regional
government's "Small-Mid Sized Technology Development Fund".

The Japanese team have so far failed to enter Formula 1 due to a lack of
sponsorship though their plans continue. Earlier in the year they were
linked to Honda's Formula 1 return and the development of the new gearbox
could be part of an attempt to court the Japanese car giants.

Dome have worked with Honda in the past, developing the Accord for the JTTC
(Japanese Touring Car) and the NSX for the JGTC (Japanese GT Championship).
They have also fielded teams in the All Japan F3 championship and Formula
Nippon.
