And here we go...
"Klingons and Nazis and Borg...OH MY!"
For the first bits, this was as exciting as flossing my cat's teeth.
Janeway as a Klingon, and Hirogen, but...there simply *was*not* a story in
there...it seemed a bit disjointed and directionless, as if they had 'mixed and
matched' plot lines.
But then...something in the episode seemed to catch my brain...and something
clicked in my mind and I called for the tape to be stopped, while the Clarke
Labs group waited for my analysis, which was the quote stated above...
And everyone agreed...the idea had just "jelled" that there was more to this
script than met the eye. This was about 18 minutes into the episode. At 35
minutes into the tape, while we tried to make sure the Leader Hiroghen was
_not_
being played by Michael Ansara, we concluded that there was no other way for
the
script to go, and so we all settled back to enjoy the ride.
Professor Clarke and I were the only ones who realized what would happen when
Charlie One was contacted and given coordinates.
NOTE TO ALL: If you can use the "Closed Captioning" function on your TV or
VCR, do so. We watched the captions to discover that the French women walking
in front of the Nazi HQ were given relevant lines, translated to English
subtitles, to _explain_ why Be'lanna/Brigette was spat upon just before she
stumbles.
As well, a *lot* of dialog said 'off-camera' is transcribed to the captions as
well...As "Captain Miller" was arguing with Janeway on who went into the
"escape
tunnel", there was an interesting dialog between "Lieutenant Bob" and "HQ" in
the background.
An oddity, however, was that the German was *not* translated.
We were also trying to figure out how the use of Borg technology would enhance
the effectiveness of a M-1 Garand, a Mauser or a Luger pistol.
Professor Clarke suggested the use of accelerator coils extracted from Seven's
arm to assist in turning the Luger into a rail gun, but beyond that we were
unable to see how it could be done. I suggested fins on the Luger.
Overall, this episode, like the 1950s homage to the old radio shows and
serials, was also an homage to one of the classic Trek radio serials, where
Gary
Seven's 'time toaster' was captured by Nazi agents, and SS troops were
transported back to the time of the Vulcan Awakening to change history.
I am duly impressed in these bits of history in the 70th anniversary of Trek's
first radio appearance.
Also, we noted *why* the two episodes were shown back-to-back...looking at the
prelude/recap teaser at the beginning of Part II, we realized that the recap
explained *absolutely* nothing...there was *NO* possible way to see the intro
and understand a damn thing in Part II without seeing Part I.
