Deb,
I would encourage you to consider options besides working at home.  For
instance, you could move to a location near a bus stop, or even within
walking distance of your work.  As for myself, I live within walking
distance of work, and next to a major bus route.
If you are in a situation where there is no option other than the use of
 a taxi, you might place it in proper perspective.  A sighted person
must make car payments, pay car insurance, pay for gas, and car repairs.
 This amount could easily add up to more than what you would pay in taxi
costs.  In addition, I would encourage you to recalculate your taxi
costs.  Unless you live in a town where the cabs charge $7 per mile, you
have miscalculated the taxi cost.
