Berger back with BMW

(7-Jul-98) - Former Grand Prix driver Gerhard Berger has been appointed
motorsport director for German car giants BMW.

The Austrian, who quit Formula One as a driver at the end of last season,
will oversee the German company's competition activities, including their
imminent entry into Formula One as engine supplier to Williams.

"This is an important new challenge, which I am taking on with great
interest and enthusiasm," said Berger.

"This is a five-year deal because we want some long term commitment. I
believe it is very important for a team to understand each other because in
Formula One everything must be perfect and everything must fit together. If
we make that happen, then we will be successful."

The 38-year-old, who made his Formula One debut in a BMW powered ATS,
denied that he would return to the driving seat to shake down the new BMW
powered Williams when it finally arrives, "I am very aware that my
time as a racing driver is over. I don't think I will get to drive the
car."

Williams team owner Frank Williams described Berger as "a great asset."
