Maybe he won't have to.  That haunted look was likely the result of not
truely facing what he did in the Time War.  We already knew that he was
instrumental in wiping out the Daleks, but we were also given the
impression that the Daleks had destroyed Galifrey and wiped out the
Time Lords, and now we know that is not what happened... it was The
Doctor.  He destroyed his own people.  Even knowing that doing so saves
the entire universe, it's still a heavy burden.
