Keep the eyes peeled

Only the paranoid survive, says the wise man on the hill-top.
The wise people on Capitol Hill have taken this advice seriously
enough to give the nod to a system that will monitor the movements
of people visiting the US.
A new system will keep tabs on visitors who require visas to enter
the US. That covers a pretty large number of people, all of whose
backgrounds will come under the scanner.
But what about dangerous elements who might already be gestating
inside the country - future "American Taliban" John Walker Lindhs
or "Oklahoma Bomber" Timothy McVeighs? To identify these types before
they do something nasty, there's talk of installing another system
that will track anyone who seems "suspicious". And in order to
notice anybody suspicious, one must notice everybody - which is
exactly what Pentagon has in mind. An attempt is now under way to
create a "virtual centralised grand database" which will keep the
Big Eye always open: looking into people's shopping lists, e-mails,
bank accounts, vacations, medical prescriptions, trips and other
details.
Short of going inside people's head, the Pentagon-funded research
project hopes to ensure that America is not caught napping. Apart
from all these Big Brotherly gestures, there will also be a radar-based
device using hi-tech systems ("spatio-temporal 3-D body tracks" sounds
as hi-tech as it gets) that will record the way people walk - yes, walk
- which, in turn, will help in identifying them. One won't be surprised
if privacy starts being perceived by the powers-that-be as the last
refuge of the scoundrel in America.
