You may have to consider the fact that some citizens may view being
exposed to chemicals that are proven to shorten human life as serious
as maybe speeding or running a stop sign. When _enough_ citizens have
this opinion, the pressures to step up enforcement could increase.
If you consider your constituency your "jurisdiction", you are probably
right.
Don't get me wrong, Tom, I'm certainly not advocating a policy where
cigarette smokers are shot on sight :), but I AM serious about not
wanting tobacco smoke blown into my face any where or any time. My
heart surgeon told me that it was detrimental to my health and _would_
shorten my life. Not only do I take him seriously, but the overwhelming
opinion of qualified researchers agree with him. Why should I be less
concerned with this than I am with simple speeding on the interstate,
trespassing, littering, or for that matter, any other assault to my
person? What police activity do you consider more serious than
something that has been proven to be directly linked to more deaths per
year than any war in history?
What has _your_ physician told you about the effects of cigarette
smoking on your personal health and recovery from recent illness?
If he hasn't mentioned it, ask him... ask him if you do it in my
presence, am I subject to the same risks... then tell me which activity
you are involved in that is more serious and why.
Do you advocate laws that prohibit selling tobacco to minors and/or laws
that prohibit them using tobacco? If so, explain why you support those
laws and you don't support a law that protects unwilling adults from the
same substance.
