RW>RT> If it were that simple, I would agree with you.
RW>It has always been that simple. You don't like a
  >business you hit the street.
Actually Rich, I have to partially agree with you here. I believe a man
should be able to conduct his business as he sees fit. Now do we apply
the same logic to all aspects of the restaurant business. Lets let the
workers wash their hands IF they want to. Lets allow the owner to spend
less money on sanitation, refrigeration, and food preservation issues.
Lets allow the workers to use their hands to handle food. Lets don't
worry about bacterial levels in food. And lets don't place any standard
on the types of food served, the conditions they are prepared in, and
the sources from which they are derived. Lets let the customers decide
whether or not the place is worthy of their patronage.
RW>RT> There are VERY few smoke free restaurants. When there is
  >RT> one available, I will patronize it.
RW>Doesn't this show you that most people aren't concerned
  >about smokers? After all if there was a huge chuck of
  >people out there who didn't want to be around smoke
  >there would be smoke free everything on every corner.
Look very closely Rich. Every day there are more and more people who
are waking up to the fact that they ARE uncomfortable breathing tobacco
smoke. They ARE worried about the adverse health problems associated
with tobacco smoke. AND they ARE letting their pocket books and their
feet speak... They (we) are having to fight an uphill battle because of
the long ingrained idea that we should be "tolerant". Keep looking...
you will find that sooner or later, there WILL be smoke free everything
on every corner. Its a hard battle, but we are winning.
  >A smoke free place can't get enough business to survive
  >because there are so few people who care.
When management has had the guts to try smoke free, it has worked. And
more and more people are expressing their concerns. They've ALWAYS
cared, they have just tucked it in and kept quite. The pendulum is
swinging. Its not just another politically correct thing to do, it is
the correct thing to do and management is realizing that the buying
public is now AWARE the it is the correct thing to do. Smoking areas
are getting smaller and smaller as the non-smoking crowd demands more
and more space. Thats because management is catering to the area that
produces the most revenue.
Basically, you and I are in agreement in the business environment. I do
believe that a man should be able to run his business as he sees fit and
let the natural law of supply and demand determine whether or not he is
successful. I will spend my money on those places that share the belief
that my health is sacred, and who conduct their business in my interests
as well as their bottom line.
The laws that I support will prohibit smoking in PUBLIC areas. I want
to see a smoker arrested and hauled off in handcuffs for smoking in a
public park.
Once we have strict laws governing tobacco usage in public areas, the
private sector will soon conform. We won't have to regulate it because
the then wary public will demand the same from them.
