McLaren protest Ferrari victory

(13-Jul-98) - McLaren have protested Michael Schumacher's victory in
Sunday's British Grand Prix after the controversial finish surrounding the
German's 10-second stop-go penalty for overtaking under yellow flags.

The championship-leading team are furious that Schumacher was allowed to
take his penalty on the final lap -- and now during the race itself.

Ferrari team boss Jean Todt explained: "At the moment, we do not
understand when the yellow flag incident occured which led to Michael's
penalty."

"When the official handed us the document relating to the penalty, he
was unable to tell us if it referred to Article 56c or 56e, as it was
handwritten on the document."

"Because of this doubt, we brought Michael is for a stop-go penalty on
the last lap, in conformity with the regulations allowing you to make the
stop within three laps of its notification."

Article 56e means a driver's race time may have 10-seconds added to it
afterwards by the stewards, while article 56c means the penalty must be
taken during the event itself.
