(Continued from previous message)
The umpire's dressing room isn't considered "on the field". The park
director, a city employee, likes to hang out there so he can smoke.
That isn't reasonable.
We attended an open air concert Sunday afternoon in a public
park in a nearby city. (Florida Boys, Earl). A woman in the seat in
front of me lit up. My choice was to endure her smoke or move. That
isn't reasonable.
After diner at Shoney's where we requested a smoke free area, we had to
walk through the smoking section to get to the cash register. While at
the register, a customer held a lit cigarette while she checked out.
Standing behind her, I had to breathe it. That isn't reasonable.
Incidentally, a "No Smoking in Lobby" sign was posted.
I stopped by the police station to visit with a friend and catch up on
local happenings when I got back to town. The station is smoke-free.
One of the dispatchers was standing in the door, holding his cigarette
"outside", he'd stick his head out, take a drag, and then pull back so
he could monitor the radio. Not only did I have to walk through his
cloud, but standing "outside" did nothing because the ventilation system
pulled all his smoke back inside anyhow. That isn't reasonable.
I could go on and on. The non-smoker is unwillingly exposed to the
exhaust of other's habits repeatedly on a daily basis.... everywhere we
go. The smoker is obviously not going to police himself because he
denies the harmful affect of his habit. He has no motive to do so....
he just feels that he is being unduly discriminated against when I ask
him to not force me to join him. Strong laws such as you describe in
California and strong enforcement of those laws are the only apparent
relief that we have.
The real irony I see in smokers is that if, for instance, I walked up to
their dining table while they were involved in a meal and blew a good
healthy boiled egg fart, they'd all go ballistic, but they never consider
their cigarette smoke as offensive to me. Go figure.
