>I've just gotten access to Fido's Parrots. i am enjoying it immensely.
Hi, Barbara, and welcome to Parrots! It's honestly NOT always like this
out here; sometimes it's INTERESTING!
>Are people ever banned from breaking echo rules? Is this an example of
>an infraction?
Oh, yes, people DO get banned from echoes. I have had to do it myself a
couple times. And again, yes, these would be good examples of a "death
sentence".
>You mention that you moderate one of TWO Fido bird echoes? What is the
>other one? I saw a list of the Fido backbone recently and don't
>remember seeing another bird related echo listed. What is it called?
"Aviculture." Polly Goldman can tell you about that one; she's the
moderator there.
>Are there others also?
There WAS one called "exotic_birds", but I think it died a while back.
>We can get WWIV net also ; do you know of it and if there are any
>there?
I don't know what that is...must be another network like Fidonet, right?
Ask your providing sysop about echo/newsgroup lists--he/she should be
able to tell you what's available.
>About Cherry heads--can you give me any advice? I have about 400 birds.
Geeeez, and you want MY advice? I've only got 16 birds altogether!
>I have 16(I think) species of conures. I can breed Pyrhurrahs all day
>long. We live in North Fla where it is really hot and muggy in the
>summer and fairly mild in the winters. I have never gotten my pair of
>cherryheads nor my mitreds to breed. I can breed White eyes and Red
>throated conures but not the CH's or mitreds (or the blue crowns. They
>did have infertile eggs this year.)
Mine are rather unpredictable. I only have one pair of CH's. They LIKE
hot muggy weather--I only get eggs or babies between July and October.
It's funny; I've noticed that they ONLY go to nest if I "shake them up"
a bit. By that, I mean, if I rearrange their lives a little. One year I
gave them a new nestbox--I had eggs in 3 weeks, first ones in three
YEARS. Next year, I put them in a new cage. Had eggs within a month.
This year, two or three weeks ago, I simply moved their cage to a new
wall in the bird room. The hen is now "pregnant", and showing hugely.
Their fertility rate has been excellent--babies will result, I'm sure.
>They are all s/s and have been cultured. The male CH came from Howard
>Voren in So. Fla, one of the authors of Bird breeder magazine. So at
>least soem of them come from very reputable sources.
They were pronounced internall OK during sexing? Then it's probably some
stimulus that's lacking. Mine seem to thrive on a bit of stress--they
go to nest almost immediately after their lives have been "threatened"
by changes. How long have yours been in the same cage/spot? Perhaps
simply a change to a new cage, or a new nestbox might do the trick for
them? It's a cheap solution, and it might just work!
>powder) and Fruits and veggies. Their cage has a tin roof. the hen
>stays in the box most of the time. She and the male seem to get along
>well. The hen is very defensive of her box.
My pair BOTH spend a lot of time in the box. The male is the hostile
one; the hen lets him defend her and the box from me, the evil human.
My male overpreens her, so her head looks like it's covered in straw
instead of feathers. But otherwise, they're fine, big and healthy.
>She was once tame and was let to rule her humans' house. I got her
>when she began attacking people. She has been around a few years but
>is not old. This comes from several previous owners vet records.
Perhaps she's just too used to people, and intimidates or confuses the
wilder male, who WANTS her to be more fearful, having been wild-caught
himself. You might, if it's possible, switch her mate, and get her a
domestic male, and get the wild male a wild hen. These are all just
suggestions; I'm no cherry-head expert, having only one pair.
Welcome aboard!
