| subject: | NEC floppy drive |
Hi Sharon... SM> I am looking for a replacement dreive for an APC III NEC computer. SM> It can be either a 5.25 high density or a 3.5 high density drive. SM> Either drive MUST be able to work on this machine, other floppy drives SM> have been tried and they don't agree with this machine. If this is really an NEC APCIII and not some other model, the reason they don't work is probably because the APC III did *NOT* use high density drives. It was supplied with 80 track quad density 5.25" drives, a correctly jumpered 720k 3.5" drive should work.. Your main problem will be that a lot of the floppy drives that were made more recently were supplied for PC's and they don't have jumpers to change the settings (you need a soldering iron, pliers, and maybe a knife to do it)... As for an 80 track 5.25" look for a mitsubishi M4854 or similar, they were used in quite a few different machines, so they should be around. You'll have to play trial and error with the jumper setting's though, it's been ages since I've played with an APC III. Any 5.25" drive that was used on an Amiga should be able to be made to work as they used 80 track drives almost exclusively.. SM> I would also be interested in any setup software for this machine. As far as I know they don't have CMOS, they are not a PC compatible. If it has a SLE card then it will run a certain amount of PC software, otherwise you'll need vanilla MS-DOS software that makes no hardware assumptions or stuff written specifically for the APC III..
