There are a couple of answers to this one. First of all, the problem
could be your mask and not the regulator. If you have a poor seal
on your mask the slightest disturbance from the exhaled bubbles could
cause you problems. You might also want to consider a low-volume mask
which has a "sleeker" profile. As far as the regulators go, there are
several types of regulators that offer side-exhausts (as opposed to
the bottom-exhaust type that you probably used in class). If you choose
to continue diving you should probably experiment with several regulators
and masks till you find the setup that's right for you.
