Of course he did. He could have refused to repent while in the belly of the
whale, and died there. Or he could have changed his mind after he was spat up on
the beach, and decided to resume his flight.

Of course, if either of these things had happened the Book of Jonah would not
have been written. Jonah would have simply died as another impenitent sinner.
